The students of Bergen Chinese School’s Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) held its first exhibition on June 11, 2023.
The highlight of the exhibition was a short play called “Auntie and Cousin Come to My House” (阿姨和表妹來我家). Over the past 12 weeks, the students have devoted three hours a week to learning Chinese language and culture, and practiced good Chinese conversation skills, such as dialogue used when meeting people for the first time, the application of titles, how to introduce relatives and friends, etc. Meeting etiquette, tea culture, traditional Chinese skills and mahjong were all integrated into the play, so that students can learn from an authentic experience. In the short play “Auntie and Cousin Come to My House”, Mingwen’s Auntie and Cousin An An visit her and family, bringing Taiwan’s famous pineapple cake. Mingwen’s mother invites them to enjoy some high mountain tea from Taiwan’s Alishan. Through a Tai Chi Kung Fu Fan and Floating Fan Competition held by Mingwen’s parents, the audience and students not only witnessed the difference between Kung Fu Fan and Floating Fan, but also experienced the charm of traditional Chinese dance. Mingwen takes his cousin to visit her uncle’s house, and in the process used the Chinese he learned to introduce himself and to address him. They play through a round of mahjong games, using words and phrases typically used while playing this classic game.
